Look no further than Emfasis Foundation, a Greek based non-profit organization providing relief work for the homeless.
The Founder, Maria Kara, started the organization in effort to aid the suffering of those living in homelessness or extreme poverty in Athens, Greece. Their work is coined “street relief” because they bring food, clothing, sleeping essentials, and other survival needs to those in dire situations.
When the refugee crisis came to Greece in 2009, Maria found herself on the frontline of the crisis, as her mission statement is to aid those in need of basic human essentials. The state of crisis has changes drastically since the refugees first came over, and they are now living in much better conditions, as the situation has somewhat stabilized. There is still so many unresolved issues, the biggest of which: where do these people go now?
There might not ever be a real solution to homelessness or the refugee displacement, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do our part to lend a hand to those in true need. The work that Maria needs the most help with is organization and prep. She is a small team and can use hands in her HQ organizing and filing donations, as well as in the street relief delivery work, getting all survival essentials to the people who need them.
