We had the great fortune to work with Smile Train this May in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This is an international children’s charity that provides 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in 85+ developing countries. Their sustainable model empowers local doctors to provide cleft care in their own communities.
We were able to visit one of their surgery centers in the city centre of Phnom Penh, as well as meet with out-patient children and infants. The Smile Train approach differs from others because they empower local doctors and surgeons to run the facilities, which are used in a day-to-day capacity for routine procedures.
The plastic surgeons who perform the procedure are 100% volunteer based, and donate their time on the weekend to give children a new smile. They are the largest charity dedicated to providing FREE cleft surgery to low income and rural communities worldwide. To lean more, and on how to get involved, visit their website.
